Can singing together lead to world peace?
History, science and current events all back up the idea that making music in a group improves communication, coordination, cooperation and empathy among group members that may be felt for decades! In other words, music is a peace-building tool that is largely untapped. If there is one thing we can all agree on, surely it is that we need more peace in the world! So what can we do about it? (watch the TEDx video on this page to learn more.)
S.M.I.L.E. is an acronym for Shine My Inner Light Everywhere. S.M.I.L.E.s are organized acts of kindness. S.M.I.L.E. Day events invite people to experience a slice of peace in the world by making a little bit of music together with a diverse group of people while assembling “smile bags” of comforts like handwarmers, protein bars and maybe a warm beverage on a cold day, or a cool water bottle on a warm day, handed out to unsuspecting people on the street with smiles and an invitation to join in the music!
The Science behind a SMILE
Science has shown that the mere act of smiling can lift your mood, lower stress, boost your immune system and possibly even prolong your life! Each time you smile your brain feels really happy. When you smile; dopamine, endorphins and serotonin are released into your bloodstream, making your body relax and lowering your heart rate and blood pressure.
BONUS: The recipients of your smile receive similar benefits!
